The LORD is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit. God has said, "Never will I
leave you; never will I forsake you." So we say with confidence, "The
Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"

REJECTION
AND
LONELINESS
(Exodus 33:14 NIV) The LORD replied, "My Presence will go with you, and
I will give you rest."
(Deuteronomy 4:30-31 NIV) When you are in distress and all these things have
happened to you, then in later days you will return to the LORD your God and
obey him. {31} For the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or
destroy you or forget the covenant with your forefathers, which he confirmed to
them by oath.
(Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV) Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified
because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you
nor forsake you."
(1 Samuel 12:22 NIV) For the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his
people, because the LORD was pleased to make you his own.
(1 Samuel 30:4-6 NIV) So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength
left to weep. {5} David's two wives had been captured--Ahinoam of Jezreel and
Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. {6} David was greatly distressed because
the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of
his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.
(Psalms 9:9-10 NIV) The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in
times of trouble. {10} Those who know your name will trust in you, for you,
LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.
(Psalms 27:10 NIV) Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive
me.
(Psalms 34:18-22 NIV) The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who
are crushed in spirit. {19} A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD
delivers him from them all; {20} he protects all his bones, not one of them will
be broken. {21} Evil will slay the wicked; the foes of the righteous will be
condemned. {22} The LORD redeems his servants; no one will be condemned who
takes refuge in him.
(Psalms 41:4-11 NIV) I said, "O LORD, have mercy on me; heal me, for I have
sinned against you." {5} My enemies say of me in malice, "When will he
die and his name perish?" {6} Whenever one comes to see me, he speaks
falsely, while his heart gathers slander; then he goes out and spreads it
abroad. {7} All my enemies whisper together against me; they imagine the worst
for me, saying, {8} "A vile disease has beset him; he will never get up
from the place where he lies." {9} Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he
who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. {10} But you, O LORD,
have mercy on me; raise me up, that I may repay them. {11} I know that you are
pleased with me, for my enemy does not triumph over me.
(Psalms 43:5 NIV) Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
(Psalms 88 NIV) A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah. For the director of music.
According to mahalath leannoth. A maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. O LORD, the God
who saves me, day and night I cry out before you. {2} May my prayer come before
you; turn your ear to my cry. {3} For my soul is full of trouble and my life
draws near the grave. {4} I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am
like a man without strength. {5} I am set apart with the dead, like the slain
who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more, who are cut off from your care.
{6} You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths. {7} Your wrath
lies heavily upon me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves. Selah {8} You
have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am
confined and cannot escape; {9} my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, O
LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you. {10} Do you show your wonders to
the dead? Do those who are dead rise up and praise you? Selah {11} Is your love
declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction ? {12} Are your wonders
known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?
{13} But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before
you. {14} Why, O LORD, do you reject me and hide your face from me? {15} From my
youth I have been afflicted and close to death; I have suffered your terrors and
am in despair. {16} Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed
me. {17} All day long they surround me like a flood; they have completely
engulfed me. {18} You have taken my companions and loved ones from me; the
darkness is my closest friend.
(Psalms 89:1-2 NIV) A maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the Lord's
great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through
all generations. {2} I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you
established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
(Psalms 91:14-15 NIV) "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I
will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. {15} He will
call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will
deliver him and honor him.
(Psalms 107:41 NIV) But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and
increased their families like flocks.
(Isaiah 41:17 NIV) "The poor and needy search for water, but there is none;
their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them; I, the
God of Israel, will not forsake them.
(Isaiah 49:14-15 NIV) But Zion said, "The LORD has forsaken me, the Lord
has forgotten me." {15} "Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will
not forget you!
(Isaiah 53:1-11 NIV) Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the
LORD been revealed? {2} He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a
root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. {3} He was despised and
rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from
whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. {4} Surely
he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him
stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. {5} But he was pierced for our
transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought
us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. {6} We all, like sheep,
have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on
him the iniquity of us all. {7} He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not
open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before
her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. {8} By oppression and
judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut
off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was
stricken. {9} He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his
death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. {10} Yet
it was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD
makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand. {11} After the suffering of
his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied ; by his knowledge my
righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.
(Isaiah 61:1-3 NIV) The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD
has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the
brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness
for the prisoners, {2} to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and the day of
vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, {3} and provide for those who
grieve in Zion-- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil
of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of
despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for
the display of his splendor.
(Matthew 28:19-20 NIV) Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, {20} and
teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you
always, to the very end of the age."
(Mark 8:31 NIV) He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many
things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and
that he must be killed and after three days rise again.
(Luke 4:18-19 NIV) "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has
anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom
for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,
{19} to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
(Luke 17:24-25 NIV) For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning,
which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. {25} But first he
must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
(2 Corinthians 4:8-11 NIV) We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed;
perplexed, but not in despair; {9} persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down,
but not destroyed. {10} We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus,
so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. {11} For we who are
alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may
be revealed in our mortal body.
(2 Timothy 4:16-18 NIV) At my first defense, no one came to my support, but
everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. {17} But the Lord stood
at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully
proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the
lion's mouth. {18} The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring
me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
(Hebrews 13:5-6 NIV) Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content
with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never
will I forsake you." {6} So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my
helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"
(1 Peter 5:6-11 NIV) Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that
he may lift you up in due time. {7} Cast all your anxiety on him because he
cares for you. {8} Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls
around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. {9} Resist him,
standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the
world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. {10} And the God of all grace,
who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little
while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. {11} To
him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
