Sin is anything that separates you from God.
Behold, the Lord’S hand is not
shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear.
But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have
hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear. Isaiah 59:1 - 2
Sin is a Lack of Love
Sin is selfishness and is always caused by a lack of
love for God and man. All of God’s laws are based on love. Anything that
is not of love is sin. A good question to ask your self when making a
decision is “what would love do”?
Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love
the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all
your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is
like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two
commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37 - 40
He who has My commandments and keeps
them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My
Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” John 14:21
When our heart is filled with love for God we will
walk in obedience to His voice willingly and with great joy.
“As the Father loved Me, I also have
loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide
in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in
His love. “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in
you, and that your joy may be full. John 15:9 - 11
Sin is the Result of the Wrong Desires
Sin begins when we turn our desires away from God and
toward other things. Anything we desire more than God is an idol in our
heart and will lead to sin.
But each one is tempted when he is
drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has
conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings
forth death. James 1:14 - 15
Sin Causes Self-Condemnation
Therefore, to him who knows to do good
and does not do it, to him it is sin. James 4:17
Do you have faith? Have it to
yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he
approves. But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not
eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin. Romans 14:22 - 23
Sin Causes Bondage and Addiction
Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly,
I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. John 8:34
Do you not know that to whom you
present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you
obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to
righteousness? But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin,
yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were
delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of
righteousness. I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your
flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness,
and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your
members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. For when you were
slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did
you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of
those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and having
become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end,
everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is
eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:16 - 23
Sin Causes Us to Miss the Goal and the Prize
The Hebrew word for sin is khaw-taw, it means “to
miss” as in miss the mark. Jesus Christ is the mark. We sin when we take
our focus off of Jesus.
Not that I have already attained, or
am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for
which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count
myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things
which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I
press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ
Jesus. Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if
in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you.
Philippians 3:12 - 15
Jesus Came to Save Us From Sin
And she will bring forth a Son, and
you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their
sins.” Matthew 1:21
“Blessed is the Lord God of
Israel, For He has visited and redeemed His people, And has raised up a
horn of salvation for us In the house of His servant David, As He spoke
by the mouth of His holy prophets, Who have been since the world began,
That we should be saved from our enemies And from the hand of all who
hate us, To perform the mercy promised to our fathers And to remember
His holy covenant, The oath which He swore to our father Abraham: To
grant us that we, Being delivered from the hand of our enemies, Might
serve Him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before Him all the
days of our life. Luke 1:68 - 75
